Hohenberg an der Eger
Hohenberg upon the Eger is situated on the border with the Czech Republic.
Its castle was first mentioned in 1222 and is built on top of a rock in the middle of the town.
You can visit the German Porcelain Museum and go shopping for porcelain in one of the factory outlets.
There is also a natural spring called Carolinenbrunnen.

Thierstein
Thierstein is a market town with about 1,200 inhabitants in the eastern part of the Fichtelgebirge.
The name Thierstein was first mentioned in an official document in 1340.
In 1725, a big fire destroyed the castle and the complete town. Today you can admire its castle ruin on top
of a basalt cone in the middle of the town.
From there you have a fantastic view of the Fichtelgebirge and the historical region of the Egerland which
forms the northwestern edge of the Czech Republic today.
Arzberg
Arzberg is an old mining town of about 6,500 inhabitants in the southeast of the Fichtelgebirge mountain
range. The border to the Czech Republic is only a few miles from Arzberg.
Therefore the town is an ideal starting point for excursions to the Czech town of Eger and the famous spa
towns of Marienbad, Franzensbad and Karlsbad where celebrities and major European rulers came to relax
and recreate in the second half of the 19th century. Arzberg was first mentioned in 1268.
In the past its most important industries were mining, the porcelain production and the weaving of linen and
wool.
You can visit an information centre in the former mining building of the ‘Little John’ iron mine, the historic
iron hammer and Alexander von Humboldt’s former place of residence.
Today Arzberg is well-known for its gingerbread and sausage production.
One of Arzberg’s twin towns is South Bend in the US state of Indiana. In the 19th century 10% of the
Arzberg population emigrated to America, most of them went to the city of South Bend. Arzberg has got a
newly refurbished open-air pool with a fun water slide.
Nagel
Nagel is a state approved holiday resort in the southern part of the Fichtelgebirge.
It is a very small and tranquil village with about 1,900 inhabitants. Locals as well as tourists enjoy its small
lake which is called ‘Nagler Weiher’. It is great for swimming as well as boating in summer and skating in
winter.
There is also a walking trail called the Teutsche Paradeiß, which is great for nature lovers. Lately Nagel has
become well-known for herbs and their health benefits.
The village’s women offer herb walks where you learn to identify herbs. You can also ask for herb courses in
which they show you how to use herbs.
Bad Alexandersbad
Bad Alexandersbad is a state approved peat and climatic health spa in the district of Wunsiedel. It is well-
known for its ferrous, carbonated spring which is used in medical baths as well as drinking cures.
Its water heals metabolic and heart diseases. You can also have peat baths which have a very therapeutic,
relaxing and antiseptic effect.
In 1805 Frederick William III and his wife Queen Louise visited Bad Alexandersbad for three weeks and in
1820 the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed there.

Röslau
Röslau is a municipality in the district of Wunsiedel. With its ten smaller incorporated places Röslau has
about 2,200 inhabitants.
In 1398 the town was first mentioned in an official document and in the past there was a flourishing
porcelain, iron and timber industry. Today Röslau is a quiet but unspoiled community in an area of
outstanding beauty.
You can go on peaceful walks through secluded countryside and discover places like the Rudolfstein, which
is a huge granite rock with a peculiar looking, layered structure.
You can also enjoy a fantastic view of twelve mountains in the Fichtelgebirge from a high ground called
Zwölfgipfelblick (Twelve Tops View).
Kirchenlamitz
Kirchenlamitz is a small town in a densely-wooded area.
It lies in the valley of the river Lamitz at the foot of a mountain called Epprechtstein.
Fichtelberg
Fichtelberg is a climatic spa near the wildly romantic Fichtelsee in the middle of the Fichtelgebirge. You can
recreate in the curative sub-mountainous climate and choose from a wide a range of activities in summer as
well as in winter. Hiking,
Nordic walking and mountain-biking are just a few examples of what you can do here. In the past Fichtelberg
was a mining village.
Today you can visit the oldest mine in northern Bavaria called Gleißinger Fels or you go to the automobile

Mehlmeisel
The village of Mehlmeisel is a winter sport resort but there are also a lot of summer activities you can do
there.
There are museums, a deer enclosure and an observation tower with the name “Klausenturm”.

Selb
Selb is in the northeast of the county of Wunsiedel, near the Czech border. Selb is well-known for its
porcelain industry and is Germany’s centre of ‘white gold’.
World famous companies like Rosenthal, Villeroy&Boch and Hutschenreuther are based here and in their
factory outlets you can get good bargains on beautiful porcelain products.
There is a wide choice of free time activities such as skiing on the mountain of Wartberg or Kornberg in
winter or a visit to a swimming lake called ‘Langer Teich’ in summer.

Weißenstadt
Weißenstadt is a former mining town and lies in the idyllic valley of the Eger river between the mountains of
Waldstein and Rudolfstein.
Today Weißenstadt is known for its enchanting lake where people can enjoy a relaxing holiday in an
attractive 4-star health resort with extensive health facilities.
Hiking, cycling and watersports are just some of the activities you can do on or around the lake. A lot of
people use the path around the lake for inline-skating. There are a volleyball and a basketball field.

Marktredwitz
Marktredwitz is a market town with a railway junction, a small shopping mall and some attractive shops in the
traffic-free town centre.
There is the Egerland Cultural Centre and Rauchs Galerie ‘Destille’ - a museum in which you can find out
more about the production and distillation of liqueurs and spirits.
In 2006 the town celebrated the Horticultural Show of Bavaria.
Wunsiedel
Wunsiedel is the county town of the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel and lies in the pretty valley of
the river Röslau.
In 1163 the name Wunsiedel was first mentioned in an official document. At that time the town belonged to
the historical region of the Egerland. The burgraves of Nürnberg received fiefdom of the town in 1258.
Wunsiedel is the birthplace of the German Romantic writer Jean Paul (1763 – 1825) and famous for a
summer festival which takes place on the oldest open-air stage in Germany.
Famous German actors, actresses and music stars appear in dramas, comedies, musicals and operas each
year. Other attractions are the rock labyrinth with its bizarre granite rock formations, the Fichtelgebirge
Museum and the falconry on the Katharinenberg.
