Other features of the Fichtelgebirge are it’s rivers and lakes.
The main rivers are:
- Saale
- Eger
- Naab
- Main
The Fichtelgebirge is one of the main watersheds in Europe. Saale and Eger flow into the Elbe and Elbe into
the North Sea. The Main flows into the Rhine which also empties into the North Sea. The Naab flows into the
Danube and the Danube into the Black Sea.
The two largest lakes in the Fichtelgebirge are the Fichtelsee and the Weissenstädter See. The Fichtelsee
has an area of 26 acres and is up to 50 ft. deep. It has a swimming and sunbathing area, sports area and
hiking trails leading in all directions. Around the lake and surrounding area is a nature reserve.
The Weissenstädter See has an area of 120 acres. This lake is used as a recreational lake, a flood retension
basin, a bird sanctuary and a source of drinking water. There are also sailing and windsurfing, camping and
fishing at this lake.
Swamps and bogs also dot the Fichtelgebirge. All are protected as valuable water collectors.
Some of the largest bogs are:
- Zeitelmoos North of Wunsiedel
- Torfmoorhölle West of Weissenstadt
- Häusellohe East of Selb
- Torf-, See- and Hüttenlohe North of Fichtelberg
The bogs have been used through the ages as a source of peat for heating purpose.
